Val d'Isère is located in SE France, in the Savoie region, very close to the Italian border. It lies at the head of the Isere Valley that ends at the Col de l'Iseran mountain pass (closed in winter). Bourg St Maurice is only 37km from Val d'Isère and is easily reached by train (Eurostar,TGV). We can arrange transfers from most local railway stations and airports. Airports distances from Val d'Isère are:
Chambéry Airport 130 Km Transfer times are from 45mins to 4 hours depending on distance travelled. Flight times from the UK are 1hour 30mins. >Back to Top The village map shows the local services, bus stops and hotels. The piste map shows the ‘espace killy’ ski area linking Val d'Isére with Tignes. Please visit the tourist information office on arrival if you require additional maps or local information. Val d'Isére provides a free bus service. Red, green and blue routes link the 3 areas of the resort. The main red route runs from La Daille to Le Fornet via the village centre. The green shuttle serves Le Joseray and Chatelard. The blue shuttle serves Le Legettaz. In Winter Season they run from 0830h up to 0200h. In Summer Season they run from 0715h up to 2000h. Timetables are located at most bus stops.
There are plenty of taxis at the Val d'Isére coach station. There are also frequent buses down to Bourg St Maurice and its railway station.
There are also a number of ski-rental, designer boutiques, jewelers, newsagents, antiques, bakeries and a choice of supermarkets. Credit cards and travellers cheques are widely accepted and the local currency is the Euro. Most shops open between 0830-2000h Mon-Sat (but some close between 1230-1500h and on Public Holidays) Most shopkeepers prefer to speak French but there are many shops that are run by English seasonal workers. Passports are required and they must be valid for at least 3 months prior to departure. You do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days or by holders of 'British Citizen' endorsed passports. It is important that you have adequate sports and medical cover on your Insurance. It is also a good idea to carry a credit card with you as you may have to pay for medical assistance before you can claim on your insurance. The Carte Neige is a basic insurance policy for the whole ski season, and can be purchased with your ski pass for any period over a day. Please note your E111 does not cover mountain rescue or transport home after an accident. In France you can claim up to 65% of treatment costs back from the French Social Security but this takes about 3 months. Please contact me for more information. The winter temperature in Val d'Isére can vary between freezing and -20 degrees centigrade, depending on the wind and altitude this can feel much colder. However, it is not uncommon to have temperatures at around 15 degrees at the village centre in April. In the summer these temperatures will rise well above 25 degrees in the day and fall to about 15 degrees at night. It is best to wear a waterproof and plenty of light layered clothing in the mountains as you can take the layers off when you warm up. It is also a great way of trapping your body heat.
